Tomoko Spa Beverly Hills: Experience the Ultimate Authentic Japanese Spa Retreat
When it comes to couple’s massages in Los Angeles, Tomoko Spa is truly unparalleled!
This blog post was originally published in February 2023 and updated in December 2025.
Tomoko Spa undoubtedly sets the gold standard for spa luxury and relaxation in Los Angeles. It is a serene Japanese retreat tucked away just down the street from Rodeo Drive. The owner, Tomoko Kurono, has an incredible backstory where her own mother was her village’s healer in Osaka, Japan. She was raised with her mother’s reverance for the healing powers of both Chi (blood) and Qi (energy). In 1999, Tomoko started her 9-year quest to find the absolute best massage treatment that removed negative energy and left her feeling renewed. Though she encountered many impressive techniques, there was a noticeable lack of synergy between technique and soul. Her meticulous research combined with her innate energy healing talents led to the conception of Tomoko’s signature massage. You can read Tomoko’s full story here, and see the spa’s press features here.
I had dreamt about going to Tomoko Spa ever since I saw a favorite celebrity post about it back in 2017. I finally booked their famous couple’s massage to surprise my best friend for her birthday in 2021 (foreshadowing—it was so good I booked it again for us the following year!). Pro tip: include yourself in gifts to friends. When I later saw Tomoko Spa featured in the first season of Bling Empire, I once again giddily crowned myself a certified early adopter for unique experiences.
When you call to book the treatment, you are given paperwork in advance to select focus areas and intensity of the massage and stretching. You can already tell ahead of time the attention to detail in providing the most amazing massage experience! Walking into the spa, you are immediately transported to Japan. Being half Japanese, I always love finding experiences that reflect authentic Japanese culture. You are given slippers to change into immediately, and offered a (first of many) cup of organic tea. There are no locker rooms—instead, you are ushered to your own exquisite private suite with a closet, massage beds, foot bath area, traditional Japanese dining table, rose petal ofuro (Japanese bath), and shower. My best friend and I were totally blown away, and the treatment had not even started! Upon changing into beautiful kimonos, there are buttons under the heated massage beds to signal to your massage therapists that you are ready.
The experience starts off with an Ashiyu foot soak and reflexology, which had me transported to heaven within seconds. The massage therapists are so skillfully trained, and perform each movement on both of your feet in complete unison. It is truly like witnessing an art form! Ashiyu is a traditional Japanese ritual where the feet are warmed before a massage in order to improve circulation and enhance post-massage benefits.
After the renewing foot soak and massage, your therapists will leave the room so you can undress and snuggle into their luxurious heated massage beds. The massage bed signaling buttons are so innovative—and truly ensure the most relaxed experience. With your detailed preferences already noted in advance, it’s as if the massage was intuitively designed and tailored to you. To put it simply, it is the best massage you could dream of.
Now, just look at this presentation! The treatment ends with a beautiful spread of tea, Sugarfish, and Japanese specialty desserts in your private suite. I truly understand why Tomoko Spa is a favorite amongst A-list celebrities—it is extremely rare to find a spa with this level of seclusion! I have had Sugarfish “Trust Me’s” countless times, but the zen ambiance somehow makes the Sugarfish taste even better. It comes with a cute origami paper crane, which I always love to take home with me. Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes was one of my favorite books growing up, and I love to decorate my apartment with them!
You are given a generous amount of time in the suite to eat your meal, bathe in the rose petal ofuro, and shower at your leisure. The gorgeous Hinoki ofuro is very Instagram worthy—you can get some inspo from Stassie Baby here! There is also a platter of my favorite Ito En jasmine tea to enjoy while feeling like a royal princess in the bath. In total, you are given about four glorious hours for the experience. Chopsticks, chocolates, and tea are thoughtfully sent with you in a goody bag home. Tomoko Spa is the epitome of perfection and should be at the top of everyone’s list for a celebration to spoil a friend or loved one, or ultimate self care day. It is rare to find an experience that not only lives up to but far surpasses its luxury price tag. Whenever I am able to splurge on a spa experience, Tomoko Spa is always the first that comes to mind. There are multiple treatment offerings in addition to the couple’s massage, and don’t forget to follow them @tomoko_spa!
P.S. Don’t forget to take your Japanese fan with you. I love to decorate my apartment with them! XO
