73 Questions with Nicole Simonek
Get to know me better with this personal, Vogue-style Q&A about me and my favorite things.
How did you get started with your blog?
I started my blog in 2022 during my mental health sabbatical—something that had long been on my bucket list. I initially invested way too much time trying to design everything myself from scratch, so I ended up hiring a wonderful website designer to get it built in one day. I have been consistently blogging ever since, and it is the pride and joy of my life!
What was your New Year’s Resolution, and have you stuck to it?
I stopped doing a long laundry list of New Year’s Resolutions a few years back, and instead choose one word to represent my theme for the year. I went bold for 2025, choosing indomitable. I have developed so much strength, resilience, and self-belief especially in recent years—I am choosing to lead with indomitability in this next year (and do feel that I have matched its energy thus far). As far as my aspirations for the year, those are often depicted in my vision board scrapbook. To be revealed as I complete them!
What advice can you give someone starting out their self-discovery journey?
Self-discovery starts with inner reflection, so it is imperative to be able to have alone time on a frequent basis. Though I do not promote extended periods of deep isolation (but self aware that I do have tendencies to do so), alone time means no plans and outings, no being around people, no constant talking to and texting others. A lot of people think that they are doing the “alone time” and yet wonder why they are still stuck when they have not even allowed their mind to focus solely on oneself for even just a day. The next step is self-realization, and requires true honesty with oneself to face all negative habits, thoughts, and self-sabotaging behavior (in the spirituality world, shadow work). A big chunk of the hard work is learning to identify thoughts as they cross your mind, and redirect them or probe into them to start rewiring your brain. If apathy is an issue you face, healing support will be needed in order to manage and eventually overcome it.
What is your number one hosting tip?
Always have snacks or small bites prepared (charcuterie boards are my go-to), a bottle of wine chilled or cocktail recipe on hand, and flowers or candles lit for a welcoming environment. If I am hosting someone overnight, I pull out my queen-sized air mattress and like to make small care packages or personalized gifts.
As an amateur mixologist, what is your favorite cocktail to make?
This is a hard one because I love the full range, and it often depends on my mood. If I had to pick just one, it would be a classic martini with a lemon twist as the ingredients are so simple but you really have to make sure you get it right. I am a gin martini girl, and Monkey 47 is my absolute favorite!
What is a book that everyone should read?
I think books can be as personal as a skincare routine or diet. What liberates one person may make another spiral, what one person hated could be the best book someone else has ever read—they hold a different meaning based on one’s own belief systems (essentially everyone reads a slightly (or majorly) different variation; the text is static but the interpretation is not). I also find that when I read book reviews a lot of people base liking a book on whether they liked the main character or not—for me, sometimes reading about characters’ extreme flaws helps me identify any of my own self-destructive habits. I tend to read a lot of romance novels and sad girl books (when I have time). I pick up books in waves—but would consider myself moreso of a participant in tsundoku (though I am trying to get better, lol). So, my long-winded answer is I don’t think everyone should read these but they are my own favorites.
My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh (if you can’t relate to sad girls, don’t read this one lol)
Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors
The Book of Beautiful Questions by Warren Berger
The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann
Anything by Ali Hazelwood or Abby Jimenez (for my lover girls!)
Wine Girl by Victoria James (similar vibes to the movie Somm but from a woman’s POV—she was the youngest sommelier in the US!)
What were your favorite books growing up?
I read so many books growing up but the standouts would be Junie B. Jones, The Cupid Chronicles, The Secret Garden, the Fearless book series, A Series of Unfortunate Events !!, The Princess Diaries Meg Cabot books, The Clique, Sophie Kinsella books, The Chronicles of Narnia, Twilight…I know I am missing so many so I’m going to check the next time I go home and update this answer.
How do you stay on top of things?
I used to hold myself to an impossible standard of to-do lists, intricate planners, and scheduling every second of my day. Now, I let me energy levels for each particular day dictate what I am able to accomplish in a given day. For example, if my energy is at 10% on a given day then that 10% is actually my 100% for that specific day so I must plan accordingly. Also, instead of trying to do a million different things each day, I like to prioritize just a few things and dedicate longer time spans to work on them (though I am a pretty amazing multi-tasker). I do love the fridge magnet I have, that helps to remind me of the major things I need to remember (errands, admin activities, and event reminders).
Do you have any secret manifestation tips you can share?
My biggest tip is that you have to embrace it full force—which many people struggle with. You can draw a parallel to the placebo effect; you truly have to believe in your heart that it’s going to have a positive outcome for it to work. Additionally, many people put too much focus on the actual ritual or routine rather than the beliefs and thoughts that are essential to pair with them. You can read, say, or write words down but unless you affirm them in your subconscious they are useless. You can hold 20 different crystals but unless you attach their specific uses and healing properties to them, they will have little effect. Lastly, it is essential to spend a lot of alone time to figure out what exactly it is that you want, what is holding you back, and what resistance you are holding onto in your thoughts and body.
Do you have any phobias?
I have a phobia of a very specific type of paperback covers on books. They are the ones with the matte, almost velvet-like texture that I cannot stand! I mostly only get hardcover books when possible, and always take off the paper book covers. I am also very afraid of any type of bugs or rodents, though I would say I have improved over the past five years of living alone and having to deal with them myself.
What is something people may not know about you?
Okay, brace yourself—this is a funny one. In my adult life, I have never driven through a fast food drive through. It is actually on my bucket list for this year, and is one of the few anxiety-related things I have yet to face!
City or countryside?
I am definitely a city girl through and through!
Heels of sneakers?
Heels are my running shoes!
Coffee or tea?
Both! I am a total caffeine addict. You will often see me making my iced freddo cappuccinos, and iced matcha lattes. My favorite lately has been my black sesame iced matcha lattes. I also love to have Mariage Freres’ rooibos tea in the evenings.
What is your coffee order?
I normally get an iced oat milk cappuccino with an extra shot, no sweetener. I do also enjoy a nitro cold brew on ice. At coffee shops like Philz that have a set menu, I love the Rose and Mint Mojito.
What is your favorite smell?
Food and drink wise, I love the smell of fresh coffee, yuzu, mushrooms/umami, and peaches. Perfume wise—I discovered Montale a few years back and the line covered all the bases with my favorite signature scents: Sensual Instinct, Crazy in Love, Intense Roses Musk, and Arabians Tonka. I also love spraying my Laundrin’ on linens and blankets.
What is your favorite sound?
Hmm, Beyonce’s voice—live!
What is one thing that always makes you laugh?
My TikTok fyp. Living alone and exploding into laughter at all of the TikToks my best friends and I send to each other is the highlight of each week.
What is your favorite way to destress?
My shower routine is a big part of my destressing process, and two products in particular always calm my nervous system: eucalyptus and lavender spray and shower steamers. I also have several different playlists, including hz frequencies that I play when I go to sleep or when I am stressed (stemming from five years of frequent sound baths). I keep my Saje yoga rollerball in my purse at all times for destressing on the go. A face and hair mask can do wonders for my mood, and ordering my favorite takeout or a little sweet treat is always a quick fix. I also have some more unusual or extreme methods learned from my therapist, which will need a separate dedicated blog post.
What is your favorite season?
I am a fall girl—not only because it includes my birthday month (where are my September Virgos?), but also because the general vibe is in complete alignment with my favorite things. Fall is grape harvest season, and the optimal time to visit wine country. Coziness is simply in the air! Fall fashion is my absolute favorite. I also host an annual Halloween dinner party, which is always so fun to plan for.
What are some underrated small luxuries?
Shower spray and steamers, cinnamon sticks, organizers, a nice flower vase, a wine glass polish cloth, Cocofloss, vitamins (especially magnesium and l-theanine), an essential oil rollerball, a signature scent for your home, quality olive oil (hint: not Graza or the other “trendy” ones), a rice cooker, pistachio butter, creaseless hair clips, eyebrow shampoo, rose water spray, a foam roller, and a water carafe.
What is your go-to comfort food?
I am the Postmates queen, so there are so many on rotation! I have to have Dan Modern Chinese every week—I discovered it when I moved back to LA after being disappointed by the Century City Din Tai Fung multiple times. The Dan noodles with short rib are the best! For healthy-ish, I alternate between Erewhon (normally the combo of Korean short rib, brown rice balls, and buffalo cauliflower), California Chicken Cafe, Carla Cafe tuna chop, Joe and the Juice, Zinque, and Alfalfa. I order LOQUI a ton—it is superior to Chipotle—and love the beef birria bowl. For sushi, I love Masa Beverly Hills for a treat yourself moment and of course Sugarfish and Kazunori. And lastly Palmsugar for Thai food, Curry House Coco Ichibanya for Japanese curry, and Moto Ramen for winter time and when I am sick.
What is an unexpected life lesson you have learned?
There are quite a few. To start off, balance does not necessarily mean maintaining several consistent routines and habits each day, but maintaining balance in the grand scheme of life. There will be seasons of working nonstop which will free up time later in life, and vice versa—a resting period now could be in preparation for a busy season ahead. We do not necessarily avoid things in relation to our consistent goals in life, so the busy cycles will come one way or another. Some seasons are for focusing on yourself, some are for focusing on romantic interests, some are for working nonstop on your work or passion project, some are for resting and self-reflection, some are for purely having fun, and some are for discipline. Just like in Eat, Pray, Love, losing balance is a part of maintaining balance in life. If there is one life lesson piece of advice I would give to younger people, it would be to not let anyone (including you) put yourself in a box. You are allowed to be a paradox, exist in multitudes, and surpass perceived boundaries. For anyone wanting to enter the tech industry, I would say to learn how to say no, set boundaries, learn the art of prioritization, and be selective with your roles, teams, and mentors.
What were you like growing up?
I was painfully shy growing up, and sometimes still am depending on the energy of the environment I am in. However, I always became ultra hyper with those I was most comfortable with (thankfully I’ve toned it down since then, lol). I was often found reading all day in my pink fluffy saucer chair—scaring my family constantly that I was giving myself a permanent bad back. But, I’m actually quite amazed at my reading pace back then—I would read about a book a day. I was very disciplined as well, and a lot of my adulthood has been spent unconditioning the thoughts and rules I held myself to. I was absolutely terrible at sports with the worst hand-eye coordination you have ever seen, and partook in piano, karate, KUMON, choir, and tennis. I had many creative pursuits like jewelry-making, sewing, painting, drawing, and scrapbooking. My love of beauty started very early as well, with a lot of makeup and hairstyle experimentation. My love of pink and sparkles started at a very early age, and I love the fact that I never grew out of it!
What are your favorite Japanese foods?
Growing up, it was a constant rotation of salmon rice bowls, tamago and rice, karaage, udon, ramen, yakisobi, yam noodles, Japanese curry, mabo tofu, and onigiri. Sukiyaki and Nabe were for certain occasions, and that reminds me that I have been meaning to find somewhere in LA that offers them. I actually did not love raw fish sushi until college (it was solely cucumber and inari rolls for me, lol), which was a great disappointment to my family, but I am making up for lost time now! And of couse, Japanese soft cream was my biggest obsession. My favorite snacks were always shrimp chips, Karl, and nori maki.
What is the best compliment you have received?
I actually get this quite a lot but it never gets old! I love when I get complimented on my energy (it even happens on dating apps, lol). Anything from good energy, warm energy, calming energy, or just energy in general makes me grin from ear to ear. Second best would be complimenting my brain in some aspect. I am a big words of affirmation girl though, so any compliment always makes my day. The more cheesy and gooey, the better!
What is the best gift you have ever received?
I am blessed with close friends and family who are the best gift givers! My sister gifted me my first sound bath, first wine certification course, and nicolesimonek.com domain which sparked many of my ventures over the years! My sister’s fiance gifted me a fancy microphone for my vlogging. My best friends have given me all the things I love—stunning jewelry, fabulous pajamas, and treasured Baccarat collectibles. My uncle gifted me my precious wine fridge. I normally am the one with gift giving top of mind for others, so it always makes me feel so incredibly special when I am gifted things with such thoughtfulness.
What do you love most about LA?
LA is full of the most hardworking, friendly, and go-getter community. It always makes me chuckle when my friends from New York visit and are caught off guard by people greeting them hello on the street and going out of their way for a total stranger. I used to have a big itch to move to New York, but I think that LA provides the perfect blend of chasing your dreams, healing yourself, becoming your healthiest self, and having such a diverse cultural landscape to explore. There are so many amazing restaurants—Giorgio Baldi, Funke, The Tower Bar, Dante Beverly Hills, Nobu Malibu, and Lucky’s. I love that there are so many daytime activities to do, and the farmer’s market is one of my favorite routines.
What do you dislike most about LA?
Transplant and influencer culture has definitely tinged LA for me. There is nothing wrong with being a pilates princess, influencer, or transplant (I commend all of them, as I know how difficult it is to maintain an image and keep creating high quality content) but when several people in the spotlight define what LA is when they are not even from LA, it often depicts the city in an inaccurate and inauthentic manner. People who truly know LA know how diverse it is, how many hardworking people keep the city running, and have a sense of style and taste that does not involve the Hailey Bieber smoothie and doing a copy paste of where all the other homogeneous influencers are eating, shopping, and going out. I do think that LA’s nightlife has drastically taken a downturn, which is unfortunate as it used to be the absolute best time.
How would your friends describe you?
I am very particular about who I am closest to (I am an onion, like Shrek), but once I feel safe with someone I am the ultimate loyal friend. I’d like to think that my friends think of me as thoughtful, generous, a bit chaotic, and always down for a fun time. I am the go-to for wine recommendations, having recently completed my WSET L3 course. I am also the “investigator” friend and will research almost anything with extreme rigor upon request. I guess I’d be considered somewhat of a workaholic (though I am working hard to recover). I am the “woo woo” friend and big on astrology—I will always tell them what’s going on with the planets. Many call me “yoda” as my constant introspection often holds many clues to help others solve their life challenges. I approach it in the yoda way though, where I don’t give away step by step what to do but rather ask probing questions and give food for thought that will hopefully get them there. I find that if you tell people exactly what they should do, they either do the opposite, overthink it, or the interaction tends to not go over well—most things in life have to be learned the long or hard way.
What are some quirky things about your personality?
Hm, there are probably a lot! I love pink much, much more than the average person. I only wear silver jewelry, and can only have silver toned furniture in my apartment. I have the largest collection of Baccarat and Riedel glassware for someone who lives alone (and am a huge stickler for holding wine glasses correctly). I mainly only collect hardcover books (see my phobias answer). I am quite unconventional in general, and normally go the non-traditional route. My solar urticaria (being allergic to the sun) has definitely had an impact on my personality. As stated above, I am big on astrology and spirituality (which often surprises people), and have 50+ crystals (and have taken most of my friends to my favorite crystal shop, or gifted them crystals). I also do rituals such as saging, crystal clearing, and attending sound baths. I always have to have the birth chart of close friends and anyone I am dating. My intuition is normally always on point. I tend to shift my voice tone just like Paris Hilton without realizing it. I guess my Rapunzel hair is somewhat intertwined with my personality. I geek out on all things beauty. I have a ton of kitchen gadgets and would love a fully automated home. I was a choir and musical theatre child so that part of me will pop out from time to time. Okay, now getting to the downright silly and strange stuff. I make a lot of sound effects—most notably “nom nom” in relation to food, “oop” when doing something on accident, “eep” when I’m excited or scared, or “sigh” and “welp” whenever I’m disappointed or expressing sorrows and prayers. I am 1000% fluent in memes and gifs, and often express what I’m thinking through them. I use the word “shall” probably 50x more than the average person—I shall, we shall, you shall, etc. (sometimes shan’t too, lol). More strange words: hello is “hallo”, “hi hi”, or on the rare occassion “yoo-hoo”; I often add “ique” to ends of words—classique, iconique, magnifique, etc.; “leetle” for little and probably more. I love to quote one liners—often Nicki Minaj, lol. I have a bellowing, funny laugh that can often make people laugh just hearing the sound of it—I like to think that I’ve toned it down in recent years though (hopefully).
What are your current “cool girl” sneaker styles?
My newest “cool girl” sneaker brand obsession is Onitsuka Tiger. Not only do I love the Mexico 66’s, but also the EDR 78’s! I also am still a big fan of my Steve Jobs-like collection of Nike 97’s in several colors. I love the shape of the shoe—they are so bouncy, and make your feet look tiny! My platform Prada sneakers remain my “nicer” sneakers for outings, travel, and casual dinners. I got them in 2020, inspired by Dua Lipa wearing them, but have yet to see a newer Prada style catch my eye.
What is your favorite latest purchase?
Hmm, probably my new pink ceramic matcha bowl. It truly is a work of art, and makes whipping up my matcha lattes so much more fun.
What are your favorite Erewhon products?
Okay, here is my honest take on influencer culture and Erewhon. I get so peeved when I see influencers making videos of “here is me trying the $30 dollar latest collab smoothie (hint: NONE of the collab smoothies are worth it), $20 dollar singular strawberry, $20 water bottle, and every other product with an insane price tag”. Yes, the prices can be outrageous but there is a reason I have been a member for over four years now. There are not many markets where you can get purely organic, non-bruised, seasonal produce or a hot bar that only uses healthy ingredients, or products that you would not be able to source anywhere else. I want to see influencers shift to “these are the products I get every week because they are actually worth the price, comparable to a normal market, or something you would not be able to find elsewhere”. For me, these items are the to-go wraps (you can split them for two meals), the fresh tortilla chips, Koatji (the most insane matcha milk I discovered), eggs (because they are always sold out everywhere else), Majestic Hummus, pre-chopped mixed veggies (because it’s cheaper than buying 3 different bell peppers and 2 onions as a solo living person), the matchacado smoothie is the only choice to get, the zen bowl, organic purple sweet potatoes (hard to find elsewhere), organic spinach (or any pre-packed lettuce; it is never ending FILLED to the brim), Brami beans, Bohemian Raspberry pre-bottled smoothie, Manukora honey, Ora organics or Anima Mundi protein powder, combo plate (with Korean short rib, buffalo cauliflower, and brown rice balls), and custom salmon burrito.
Who are your style icons?
My style can be quite diverse—ranging from refined classic pieces, pink and sparkly, sexy, and edgy. Zendaya is simply the best in the game, no notes. Anna Sawai has been also killing it with all of her looks lately. I absolutely love Amina Muaddi; my friends know that I am her #1 customer and obsessed with her shoe line. I also love her personal style—she is the ultimate cool girl to me. My long time style icon is Eileen Kelly—I have followed her since her killer and a sweet thing tumblr days and her vintage closet is my version of heaven. Rihanna’s shoe game is also a huge influence. Another style icon would be Danielle Guizio—I absolutely love her GUIZIO brand and the both cute and sexy pieces she designs and styles herself with. Maria Georges was my favorite Bachelor contestant and truly fed everyone with her unique style—I am manifesting a closet full of Ema Savahl now (plus Leah Kateb from Love Island USA’s vintage pieces).
Who are your favorite fashion and couture designers?
As far as the big luxury brands—I lean towards Prada, Miu Miu, Chanel, Tom Ford, and Saint Laurent. I wrote a blog this past year on my suede tote from Savette, which is a brand I feel is highly underrated. I have had an obsession with Miss Sohee for several years now, and always look forward to seeing her new pieces in fashion shows and styled on celebrities for major events like The Met Gala. Did you know that she is only 28 (well, my age lol)?! When perusing through various sites and platforms, the following brands tend to catch my eye—Des Phemmes, Sandy Liang, Paloma Wool, Alessandra Rich, Vivienne Westwood, Missoni, Mirror Palais, and Ema Savahl.
What are your favorite closet pieces?
My job is remote, so my normal fits tend to entail sweatshirts and athleisure. I love Beyond Yoga’s spacedye line and I actually have a lot of fun “collectible” hoodies. To name a few—my Giorgio Baldi, Erewhon, The French Laundry, and Rowing Blazers Cafe de Flore sweatshirts. My latest favorite is this The Mayfair Group angel number zip up. For going out outfits, I tend to rotate between my Dolce & Gabbana vintage black corset, A.L.C. cropped tank tops, Self-Portrait, Paloma Wool, and GUIZIO tops. I love FRAME, Mother, and Alice & Olivia jeans—they tend to have styles that accommodate my 5’1 petite self. My jacket and blazer selection is a lot of old school All Saints, Iro, and Anine Bing. I want to expand my graphic tee collection this year and am obsessed with my RE/DONE ‘Just Bring Wine’ tee. Some vintage favorites are my Chanel linen button down shirt, Dior swimsuit, and small boutique finds. I have been patiently saving my Sandy Liang skort for a future GNO and my coveted Charlotte Simone pink Penny coat for a winter getaway in the future. I have a collection of pink dresses from every birthday of my 20’s which I may reveal in a future TikTok!
As a shoe lover, who are your favorite shoe designers?
Obviously as stated above, my number one is Amina Muaddi. The feminine silhouettes, combined with the wide range of styles, always provide the perfect finishing touch to my outfits. Tom Ford would probably be next; I have the disco platforms in silver and black and they are my most trusted shoes when I have to stand or dance for a long time (my dancing shoes for the Renaissance tour)! Piferi is next, as they make the sickest platform heels you will ever lay eyes on. Louboutin always provides a classic look, and the suede Bianca booties have been along for the ride for most of my first dates. Casadei is an IYKYK, and I look forward to whipping out my over the knee Flora boots every winter. Saint Laurent, Prada, and Miu Miu are also strong contenders. D’accori is probably next on my list—I have had the Sienna platforms on my wishlist for a while now. Alaïa heels and Le Silla flats have also caught my eye. I also discovered Ferrari’s shoe line a couple of years ago (their heels look truly amazing), and may take the plunge on a pair if I go to an F1 event.
What is your least favorite fashion trend?
The clean girl aesthetic! It is so boring. Simply copying mainstream influencers and filling your closet with beige Zara blazers does not make fashion fun (for me, at least). I also attribute “clean” to have nothing unique, imperfect, or colorful about it—which leaves little room for experimentation. To each their own, though! Also kitten heels—which normally goes hand in hand—what do you mean you are only elevating yourself by half an inch? Oh and how could I forget—Birkenstocks! The bane of my existence.
What life lessons can you share with us?
Write things down—thoughts, dreams, goals, and memories; mistakes are inevitable—call things out proactively or as they happen to avoid a lot of heartache later on; change is the only constant in life; fail often—it’s the only way you will grow; it is okay to grow apart and cut people out of your life no longer serving your current season in life; don’t be defensive in the face of conflict and confrontation—heal those triggers; figure out who likes you for you versus who wants to be you (no matter the gender); learn to take accountability; identify your self destructive habits early on and get the help you need to break them; work to live—which means you’ll have to figure out what you live for; always give credit where credit is due; don’t let society trick you into desperation and forced timelines; decenter men to unlock your highest potential (you can still have romantic relationships and love men); revoke access to your energy to those who do not deserve you; insecurity destroys potential and relationships; you do not always have to tell your side of the story—time will tell all; never take your friends and family for granted; fill your cup up first before helping others; accept all the bad parts of yourself and figure out how to work with them rather than guilting and shaming them; learning to ask follow-up questions can enrich your life in many ways; do things because you and only you want to; there will always be busy seasons and busy years—figure out where you want to frontload them; take care of your mental health as much as you care for your physical health (hint: you should not be neglecting either); love yourself fully and you can make it through anything in life; be happy for others and cheer them on loudly even if your own life is not going as planned; not everything is worth your time or energy; the snowball effect is real—make sure you nip any negative cycles; bad seasons won’t last forever; single, childless, and living alone is a privilege; don’t let your dreams slip away—take small action each day; find people that are your safe space and only want the best for you; spend at least one day each quarter to reflect and plan for your future; what’s best for you may not always feel good in the moment; everyone has their own definition of happiness and success—each one is valid and should be respected; for relationships—take people for face value rather than the potential you see in them; some people will dislike you for no reason—you cannot let others’ opinions dictate your own happiness.
What are your biggest secrets to achieving Rapunzel hair?
Davines OI milk! I spray this multi-functional magical spray on my hair right after showering, and it smooths and shines my hair like no other. I also use the Shiseido Tsubaki mask as conditioner everyday. It leaves a glossy coating and helps my hair repair quickly. Scalp care is super underrated, and I use my Nekko scalp oil at least once a week. I always sleep on my Slip pillowcase. And my biggest secret? A large consumption of seaweed on a weekly basis (my recent favorite brand is Norino Ogawa)!
Who are your favorite creators on social media?
My number one is obviously my best friend, Tariro Makoni, who makes impeccable takes on the intersection of fashion, politics, economics, and sociology. She also has an incredible Substack, TM, where she sends amazing commentary and shopping recommendations twice a week via her newsletter. Some of my favorites include Eileen Kelly, Allison Wong, Suni Lee, Cyrus Veyssi, Heart Evangelista, David Larbi, Greg Grippo/Andrew Spencer, Chris Zou, AON, Via, Rickey Thompson, and Tamara Kalinic (my best friends told me she is future me and I am truly honored). I love finding lesser known creators, as many major mainstream ones tend to lack true authenticity, taste, style, and meaningful content.
Who are your favorite celebrities?
As I was thinking this answer out, I realized there are just so many who I love—it’s hard to narrow it down! Angelina Jolie will always be number one for me—if you look up some of her interviews, you will see that she embodies philanthropist energy and exudes wisdom with every word. Not to mention how drop dead gorgeous and timeless she is! Beyonce, Zendaya, and Keke Palmer are my Virgo queens, and are perfection in every way. I honestly believe that people who do not like Beyonce either have never listened to her music (especially live performances), or simply know that they could never match her work ethic and come close to what she has been able to achieve having had to work 10x harder than the rest. I have been a Celine Dion stan for life, and am truly so grateful that someone like her exists in this world—one of the greats, amazing style, and the funniest humor of all time. Adele is the triple threat of gorgeous, funny, and talented—attending her concert was one of the best memories of my life. Kerry Washington will always be my real life Olivia Pope. I have been in awe of Anna Sawai this past year—her beauty and aura are so striking (and we always love more Japanese representation). Mikey Madison is a recent new celebrity obsession–I saw Anora in October and absolutely loved it! Her real life demeanor juxtaposed with the roles she plays reminds me a lot of myself. Cate Blanchett is the coolest woman alive and has unreal aura. I also think Dakota Johnson is an enigma, and find her so funny and quirky. Martha Stewart is the OG baddie—her thirst traps always make my day! And my forever icons—Julie Andrews, Meryl Streep, Michelle Yeoh, Salma Hayek, and Christine Baranski.
What are your favorite TV shows and movies?
I have to start out with SATC—and I am the biggest Samantha Jones stan. Watching back even now (I love watching re-runs), she has so many nuggets of wisdom and incredible one liners that I wish women would internalize more nowadays. I am also a big Bridget Jones girl—I watch it almost every month and never get tired of it. And, I have to give a shoutout to the characters that raised me (and continue to spark joy): Elle Woods, Mia Thermopolis, Andy Sachs, Jenna Rink, Gracie Hart, and Rebecca Bloomwood. I am also a big Blair Waldorf girl, and am thrilled with Leighton’s recent resurgence (as she deserves)! As far as modern shows, I love Bridgerton—Queen Charlotte is my favorite. The main shows I actually kept up with were Succession, The Sex Lives of College Girls, Ted Lasso, The Queen’s Gambit, The Morning Show, and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. In the past year, I started Scandal for the first time (I know, so late to the game) and binged the whole thing. It is one of my comfort shows now! Tell Me Lies is so good, but also extremely realistic comparing to college days—it can be triggering lol. I binge watched Jack Ryan with my family and it was actually really good. Some of my comfort movies on rotation are Morning Glory, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Pretty Woman, Crazy Rich Asians, Think Like a Man, Molly’s Game, Salt, Mamma Mia, and Maleficent. I also love watching old movies (Julie Andrews, Barbra Streisand, and Audrey Hepburn) as it reminds me of watching them with my grandparents growing up.
What are skills people need to nurture and maintain their authenticity?
In the age of influencers and hyperconsumerism, I often observe people falling into the trap of becoming 100% dependant on others for what to buy, what to wear, and even what to think. There is nothing wrong with being influenced by others or sharing cool finds—absolutely no one is immune to it (including myself)—but you want to keep tabs on the percentage of things that were inspired by others versus you. Fashion is a form of self expression, and you want to make sure your style is actually a reflection of yourself and not trying to be someone else! It is so important to let your own unique thoughts and desires inspire your consumption—you will know you’re doing it right when you research products based on your own vision in your head, or are in complete alignment with what someone else is sharing, rather than falling down the rabbit hole of figuring out what someone else has or is wearing. And the ultimate signifier—when people start copying everything you do rather than the other way around! And for anyone maliciously copying you without giving credit and stealing your ideas as their own (something I sadly often see on social media)—do not fret, karma will come for them. Having unique authenticity requires the ability to deflect this type of negative energy as it will only happen more and more often. Plus, isn’t it punishment enough that some people are simply unable to come up with their own original ideas?
What advice do you have for eclipse and Mercury retrograde season?
Though these seasons can really put us through it, I actually tend to appreciate them. I often enjoy Mercury Retrograde as it airs out everything that needs to be purged, addressed, and resolved. Eclipse season this year has been quite rough, but it is a great time to double down on shadow work and really work on personal transformation. When mid-April comes, you will be ready to thrive!
What is the last piece of content you consumed that made you cry?
I have been a Bridget Jones girl for my whole adulthood, and the latest Mad About the Boy movie made me SOB! I was a bit weary when I first saw the trailer, but they really stayed true to the OG Bridget Jones essence. I loved both romance storylines, the nods to old characters, and it was a perfect film to capture overcoming grief. I also watched One Day shortly after as Leo Woodall truly captivated me in Mad About the Boy—another one that was devastatingly beautiful to watch.
When do you feel the most inspired?
Inspiration tends to strike at very random moments, but they are most often when I am alone in deep introspection.
Vintage or new?
Vintage for the most part! I think we all know that the quality of clothing and handbags has drastically declined over the past decade, and you can only find the best materials in vintage. The challenge is finding something that can still be worn today, is the right size, and in good condition. This makes vintage collecting a very slow process, but I hope that in five years my closet starts looking like the Treasures of NYC showroom (I visited it in 2021/2022 and it is fabulous)! I also think there has been a shift in wanting original pieces, individuality, and customized items that no one else has—which makes vintage shopping that much harder nowadays!
What is in your handbag?
It depends on where I am going, but besides ID/credit cards I always have to have at least one lip balm or lipstick and lipliner—usually my Shiseido Water in Lip, Jill Stuart Beauty Lip Glow, and Chanel Pivoine lipliner. I carry my Saje yoga rollerball for on-the-go destressing. My airpods are an absolute must. Listerine strips and Cocofloss to stay fresh. I always have my teeny tiny lucky neko charm, and a few small crystals. My hand duo is the Touchland rosewater hand sanitizer and Decorte hand cream. I’ve been bad about using my Kindle in the past several months, but it also fits perfectly in my handbags. There are also probably a lot of eyelash wands at the bottom of my handbags from eyelash extension appointments.
What is your favorite type of exercise?
Okay, brace yourself—my favorite exercise is the stairmaster! I know! I think it’s because I’m so short, so running was never my specialty growing up and I absolutely hated the treadmill. I also love weight lifting and resistance bands, and my workout studio conveniently combines all of these things!
What is your favorite quote?
Wow, I may have to list off a few. “Know your worth. Then add tax” by Sharon M. Peterson. “Millionaires don’t use astrology, billionaires do”; which has had some controversy on actually attributing the quote to J.P. Morgan but we do know from his astrologer’s autobiography that she taught him astrology. I am now opening up my Pinterest as I know I have so many quotes pinned. Aha! Here we go—”the day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit” by Fabienne Fredrickson, “change is scary but so is staying the same” by various?, and of course Cher’s “Mom, I am a rich man”.
What is the first thing you notice about people?
I like to think that I can read people within the first few minutes of meeting them. It stems from their energy mainly, then body movements, facial expressions, and tone of voice.
What does success mean to you?
This has definitely shifted over the years—titles, recognition, money, and fame are no longer that relevant to this word to me. I think my current definition would be being in a state of continuous growth, being proud of what I am putting out into the world, feeling like I am in complete alignment, having practiced delayed gratification by putting in the hard work to accomplish something big by my own standards, buying myself more free time, and making a difference in the world no matter the niche.
How do you start your day?
Let me say this first—I am not a morning person. The fact that the world revolves around rewarding morning people and punishing night owls has never sat right with me (same for extroverts versus introverts). I have tried every tactic in the book, gotten professional help, and simply will never be one. There was a period when I was living in Seattle that I would get up around 4:30AM every morning to workout, but still—was neither happy about it nor a morning person. So, as a night owl and recovering burnout person, I usually have two alarms set on my sun lamp alarm and at least five alarms set on my phone. My job is full of morning and earlier time zone people (which has been a shift from being on a team of purely tech people with a later start), so the knowing that I have early meetings and will start getting pinged at least ensures that I actually have to get up. I do often aspire to have the romanticized morning routine often shown on social media, but the reality is that if I have been putting in a ton of late nights I often do the bare minimum of basic hygiene and a 5-minute makeup routine, and hopefully a big sip of water. I often make coffee after my first few meetings or during lunchtime. If I actually have time for a routine (mostly on the weekends), I like to attend a workout class, do an extended shower and beauty routine, make a gorgeous iced freddo cappuccino (or go to one of my favorite coffee shops), sage my apartment, and blast one of my Spotify playlists.
What are your biggest pet peeves?
My biggest pet peeve is people who hold their wine glasses incorrectly (on the bowl, rather than the stem—BLEH!). Other than that, my tolerance is pretty high. But, I’ll list some others off that may trigger me after an extended amount of time—rude people. People that project and make others suffer just because they’re unhappy with their life. Malicious copycats or stealing ideas as their own. People who don’t own up to things. People who constantly need validation. People who always dish it out but can’t take it. People who can’t control their anger. People who lack empathy.
What is the best way to spend a rainy day?
Staying INSIDE. Barefoot dreams plus Bearaby blankets. My Warmies starfish, Mr. Warmie. A good comfort movie. A fluffy robe. Ramen or udon. A big glass of red wine.
What is one makeup product you can’t live without?
Oh gosh, this is probably the hardest question of them all. I will make the differentiation between skincare and makeup products, and note that I absolutely have to have my Elta Md UV Clear sunscreen on at all times. For actual makeup, it narrows down to my Sisley Teint Perfection foundation, Addiction Tokyo Liquid eyeliner, and Chanel Pivoine lipliner. I’ll probably have to go with my lipliner, but those three are my absolute must haves (and narrows down a lot, as I normally have a full beat on including smokey eyes).
What makeup products are you eyeing?
Next on my list are the Surratt makeup brushes. I have been eyeing them for a long time, and cannot wait until the day that their soft bristles airbrush my face. I am also intrigued by Dior’s latest Forever Glow Luminizer powder, specifically in the Pink Halo color.
What is your favorite dessert?
I discovered Bacio di Latte last year, and it has become my number one guilty pleasure. I have always loved gelato, but lately I have taken it to a whole new level, lol. My favorite flavors are their hazelnut and chocolate variations.
On a scale of 1-10, how excited are you about life right now?
I can honestly say a solid 8 now, which is a stark contrast to previous years nearing a 1-2. I have done a lot of work on myself to finally get to this place of being grateful for where I am, excited for the future, and passionate about my work.
I hear you are a big hobby collector. What new ones are on slate for this year?
My list is ever evolving, but I have pottery, knitting, sewing (maybe I can resurrect my skills from middle school?), flower arranging, and candle making on my list.
What advice do you have for anyone going through a hard time?
As someone who knows exactly what it is like to be in the trenches for a prolonged period time, know that you will make it through to the other side. I say “through”, because the only way to heal and face your challenges is by moving through them head on—or else they may keep returning in an endless cycle. Get the help you need as soon as possible; often times it is the fear of asking for help that causes a delay and utlimately exasperates the issues. The world is full of horrible things and sometimes bad things are done to you, but it does unfortunately become your responsibility to pick yourself back up and heal the aftermath. Even if you tend to self isolate, do your best to keep your closest friends and family in your life—no one should go through things all alone. I only send light, love, and healing to anyone who has done me wrong as I have found over the years how highly protected I am, and karma may not come immediately but it always packs a big, big punch down the line. Trust in yourself and the process!
Where do you get your inspiration for your blogs?
With my diverse array of niches, inspiration strikes in different ways. My lifestyle posts often reflect my experiences living in Los Angeles, life lessons that I feel urged to share with my readers, and curated gift guides and starter packs stemming from several years of creating them for my close friends. My beauty posts reflect on my personal favorite products, brands not widely recognized in the Western world, awareness of skincare ingredients such as non-comedogenic products for acne-prone skin, and reviews of new and trending products. My travel posts reflect specially curated 5-star experiences, and my restaurant blogs reflect on culinary experiences rather than just meals. I am always searching for new and unique restaurants. My wine blogs reflect on my learnings from my WSET L3 course, and serve as a continuation of my wine tasting review practice. My cocktail blogs follow my “Nicole Method” of using percentages and proportions rather than exact measurements, focusing on customization and tailoring drinks to each person. I also include recommendation on barware, and reflect my obsession with glassware (especially Baccarat)! My working in tech blogs serve a broad range of topics—from technical interview practice, advice for college students, and lessons from working in the tech workplace.
What has been the hardest lesson of your 20’s?
As a long time people pleaser, many tough experiences stemmed from realizing that just because I treat people with kindness and generosity does not mean that they will automatically like me or treat me with the same respect. I have had my heart broken over people I considered close friends saying extremely hurtful things behind my back, not standing up for me, breaking my trust, spilling things I had confided in them with, or simply never reciprocating. It took a lot of hard work for me to get to the point where I truly do not care if I am liked or hated. A friend to all is truly a friend to none—I have the love and confidence in myself to lead me through life, and you really only need a small circle of family and friends for a quality support system.
What is a superpower you would want?
I was obsessed with Matilda growing up, and truly did believe that I could develop psychokinetic abilities if I tried hard enough. I remember many nights of staring intensely at objects in my room trying with all of my might, lol! Now as an adult, that mindset has shifted to manifestation techniques—but I would still be thrilled if I woke up one day with psychokinetic powers.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
In my early 20’s, I probably would list out my big travel plans, a big life event, or achieving a certain milestone. However, I have become even more introspective shifting into my late twenties and the inner work transformation is now what I look forward to most. I feel like I have proactively avoided a 30’s and midlife crisis by identifying and facing all of my self-sabotaging thoughts, habits, and negative delusions early on. I find that it is important to either have a person to give you brutal feedback, or force yourself into situations where you will hit rock bottom so that the only way to go is up. But other than internal transformation, I am excited to start Xolair this year and hopefully cure my Solar Urticaria!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
This is always an interesting question to pose to a Sagittarius rising—the potential for future side quests is limitless! I see myself pivoting several times throughout my life, but do think that I will maintain some sense of structure in my life. I do not foresee myself leaving a role in technology, even if it looks different from a traditional corporate role. I have been manifesting a stint in Paris for as long as I can remember, and I can see that being in the cards in about 5 years. I have many creative pursuits on my bucket list as well, and who knows what may blossom from those undertakings. I see this blog evolving with me and my new ventures over the years!
What are your favorite skincare products?
This is coming at an interesting time, because I have been a very loyal customer of Biologique Recherche for almost 7 years now. However, since hearing the devastating news that the P50 1970 is being discountinued, I have been on the hunt for a new magical toner. After much research and testing out some samples, I have landed on Valmont’s luminosity line (and the packaging is pink!). I scheduled a facial at the Beverly Hills Maison in a couple of weeks, so will report back on the experience and products that I pick up. Besides core skincare, I only use Bioderma micellar water (no regular water on my face except in the shower) and prefer the pump bottle (same one they use as spas!). Out of Shiseido, IPSA, and Decorte cotton pads I have landed on IPSA being my favorite in terms of quality, cost, and absorption. I have used Medical Beauty Research eye creams for the past few years and their formulas are truly magic. And I use Embryolisse as a daily body lotion, Caudalie Vinosculpt in the winter, and Sisley Le Sculpteur in the summer.
Are there any beauty treatments you are looking to try this year?
There are a few spas on my list and I may try my first laser facial this year—TBD!
What typical meals do you make?
I am all about “lazy girl meals”, and my number one blog post is actually my “lazy girl grocery shopping for one”. These normally include a salad/pasta mixture with lots of toppings and my favorite Kewpie sesame dressing, a salmon rice bowl (and inspired from meals growing up, not Emily Mariko lol), and pasta of some sort. I actually just started a bento box series today (to combat my long work days), which will consist of tuna salad, veggies, Brami beans, Mary’s Gone Crackers, and Majestic Garlic dip.
As a sommelier-in-training, what are your favorite wines?
I always love champagne (slowly opening with a pfft!), and my friends know that I will always have Blanc de Blanc and/or Rose Ruinart for celebrations and special evenings. I have also gotten into Billecart-Salmon rose in the past couple of years. Liquid Farm chardonnay is absolutely fantastic. Bele Casel prosecco is my favorite to use for spritzes. I love Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, and I am not much of a Pinot girl but do love DuMOL’s. You can’t go wrong with Antinori’s reds, and Tignanello is simply stunning. I got really into rieslings in the past year, and love Domaine Josmeyer’s. I am also obsessed with Tokaji since tasting some in my WSET L3 course, and the 2017 Royal Tokaji 5 Puttonyos was my favorite. I know that I have been off of my routine of publishing wine reviews, so more to come later this year!
As a sleepwear enthusiast, what are some of your favorites?
I strongly believe that having on a cute or sexy pajama fit makes going to bed and waking up so much more fun. I love feather pjs (Nadine Maberi and Sleeper), fun prints—especially martinis (Bedhead Pajamas and PJ Salvage), and silk robes and slips (Fleur du Mal and Only Hearts). I do also still love my old oversized t-shirts and nightgowns; I tend to alternate.
