The Beginner’s Guide to Astrology

Get to know your sun, moon, rising, and venus!

With a full moon in Virgo tonight, I thought it would be fun to put together a quick beginner’s guide to astrology. I am neither a professional psychic nor an astrologer, so leave it to the experts for full readings. I have loved the concept of zodiacs ever since I was young, and started taking a deeper dive into my birth chart about five years ago. These steps will help you gain an understanding of what astrology is, and what your chart can tell you.

There is no pressure to enter the world of astrology, but if you are curious about it I hope you enjoy! XO

1. Know Where and What Time You Were Born

This is joked about all over the internet with people asking what time you were born, but it is for good reason! The fastest way to get to know your chart is by using an astrology app like Co-Star where this information is required. You will get to see the full explanation of your chart, receive daily updates, and even see chart compatability with friends. I also like The Pattern, which uses the same astrological information but focuses on patterns and timing. If you do not want to go through the process of downloading an app, you can also look it up using an astrology website that will calculate your chart for you. I personally enjoy using Cafe Astrology.

2. Locate Your Sun, Moon, Rising (Ascendant), and Venus Signs

All elements of your chart are important, but normally you will start out learning about these four signs. Your sun sign is all about your basic identity and personality traits, as well as how you work and achieve your goals. Your moon sign controls your emotions and moods. Your rising (ascendant) sign is how you show up in the world and how are perceived by others. Your venus sign is how you love and what you are attracted to. These additional layers are very informative rather than just relying on your sun sign zodiac.

3. Follow Astrologists for Updates on Events

Astrology does not just involve individuals’ birth charts and when you were born. It also involves forecasting events based on the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars. Some of the biggest events that happen each year are the new and full moon cycles, such as the Virgo Full Moon tonight. Others include portals, eclipses, retrogrades, solstices, and conjunctions. You can stay updated on these by following social astrology accounts. My favorite is @spiritdaughter on Instagram and TikTok. If you are reading tonight, focus on release before stepping into a new chapter!

4. Research Interest Areas

Now that you have dipped your toes into the world of astrology, research areas of interest! The subject matter is so broad and there are many interesting activities and concepts you can dig into. Here is just a short list to start out with if you need ideas:

  • See a professional for chart readings (I highly recommend Angel Dawn, she’s amazing and incredibly accurate!)

  • Astrocartography

  • Rituals during astrological events (spring cleaning, manifesting, etc.)

  • Your Saturn return
